When the weather is clear there’s no better time to get outside and take a walk.

Walking is a great form of exercise for people of all ages! It is low impact and can provide extensive health and longevity benefits. In So Cal we have the benefit of great weather and lots of amazing outdoor spaces—many right in our own neighborhoods. Walking is second nature to us, yet we sometimes forget how to walk properly. There are simple walking techniques that we can use to keep our body balanced and in good form.

Be mindful of your FORM when walking. A great STRIDE has good POSTURE and purposeful MOVEMENTS. Follow the points of proper walking techniques below to get the most of your walks and to avoid imbalances that can cause misalignments and joint pain: 

Proper Walking Techniques
  • Hold your head high
  • Look forward – not at the ground 
  • Keep chin parallel to the ground
  • Move shoulders naturally – hands free from devices
  • Swing arms freely with your elbows slightly bent
  • Gently tighten your stomach muscles
  • Remember to wear appropriate walking shoes and walk by rolling your foot from heel to toe
  • Practice deep breathing while walking: breathe in to a count of two, breathe out to a count of four
